Slow Pour Notes

One ratio for a week

28 September 2026

For one week I brewed every cup at the same ratio: 15 g of coffee and 240 g of water. Same dripper, same kettle, same water. The only thing I changed was the grind.

The coffee was a washed Colombian from a local roaster, roasted on 9 September. I started at 22 clicks on the grinder and moved one or two clicks each day.

What happened

  • Day 1, 22 clicks: 2:40 total. Sweet but thin. A bit like tea.
  • Day 2, 20 clicks: 2:55. More body. The best cup of the week, I think.
  • Day 3, 18 clicks: 3:25. Heavy, a little bitter at the end.
  • Day 4, 19 clicks: 3:10. Good, but day 2 was cleaner.
  • Days 5–7, 20 clicks: I stayed here to check if day 2 was luck. It was not.

The lesson is not the number 20. The lesson is that one variable at a time is slow but honest. When I change ratio, grind and temperature together, I never know which change made the cup better.

Next week: the same test with a natural Ethiopian. I expect it to like a coarser grind.
